I've been waiting for a more mild day to wear my new Heinui dress from the Makers collection. It's a beautiful printed silk dress, which even with a slip layered underneath for extra warmth isn't quite suited to our winter temperatures. But on an overcast, warmer day I finally managed to wear it out of the house. Between the relaxed silhouette and sweet sailor collar, I think it will be an ideal summer dress once that season rolls around. For now I'm wearing it with my favorite zipper tights on walks through the woods--which are still looking remarkably autumn-ish in spots (our snow didn't last long).

Sheepish

As with many a winter post I must preface these pictures by acknowledging that it is quite cold and I wore a coat on top of this outfit, but shed it for the pictures. It was actually my yellow duffle coat which was too matchy with the canoe. Anyway, I'm still a die hard dresses and tights girl (even in blizzards), but I've been drawn to really cozy sweaters lately that don't work with my dresses or skirts. This sweater is actually quite warm and I adore the little red scarves the sheep are wearing--maybe next time I'll match myself to them. A little red neckerchief would look sweet, no?

Though She Be But Little

Although I'm 5'1" I don't consider myself a "petite blogger" or really think of myself as petite person most days. Still every so often you put on a garment and you think, "wow I'm short." This cardigan was one of those items for me. I put it on and wanted to laugh because if I belted it, it would be more modest and long than the majority of my dresses! But sometimes you just can't resist a oversized layer and it is quite comfy. With a tee and jeans it's perfect for lounging around the house, but to go out I definitely feel a need to keep everything else more fitted and sleek.

Populaire

Have you seen the movie Populaire? It's not the most amazing film in the world and at times I found the romantic angle less than ideal, but visually it's a knock-out. Set in the 1950s it features stunning costume design and bold, colorful sets. Point being: today is a very Populaire inspired outfit for me--down to my new typewriter brooch! I'm a sucker for fifties style dresses especially with prim little collars like this one.

Eight Tiny Reindeer

In another season the little white deer figures on my dress would remind one of Bambi, but in December with a red lip and layered under a warm coat they tend to remind me of Rudolph and the others that pull Santa's sleigh. Even the lack of antlers is rather accurate since male reindeer shed their antlers in the winter. Of course who knows what rules mystical flying reindeer live by; their habits and anatomy have probably never been studied by scientists. Anyway, I feel appropriately festive in my little dress with it's deer print. Maybe in the summer I'll get a chance to wear it at Parkanaur with their white deer!

Let Me Take A Selfie

Being the slightly camera obsessed person that I am I couldn't resist this camera lookalike purse by Betsey Johnson. My collection of vintage cameras is slowly growing (I just added a tiny Girlscout camera to the mix), so it's only fitting I have a purse that mimics my collection. Of course, it doesn't function as a camera bag; none of my cameras will fit, but it is the perfect size for my wallet, phone, keys, and other various essentials I carry around on a regular basis. In fact it might be the most functional addition to my novelty purse collection. I always think it's those quirky details that make my outfits more "me." In some ways this is just a little black dress and a good jacket, but you add in the (faux) zipper backed tights, camera purse, and even the little fox belt and it's got personality without being over-the-top.

Cat's Cradle

I've recently been a slight jeans convert thanks to a pair of black skinnies by F21, so when DSTLD reached out about their jeans I was eager to try a pair for myself. Most days I would prefer to be in a dress or skirt, but once or twice a month a pair of jeans is a fun change. Because I so rarely wear them my selection of jeans is notably limited and I've been lacking a light colored pair, let alone one with rips! I rather like the combination with the cat sweater, a little sartorial humor--as if a cat has attacked my legs, no?


A bit more about DSTLD; similar to online shops like Everlane, DSTLD [distilled] has a direct business to consumer model.
