Style Crush: Wide Brim Fedoras

I'll gloss over all the possible fedora jokes and just say: I'm really into the look of a wide brim fedora right now. I have a similar wide brim black hat, but with a floppy shape and the more structured look of a fedora is appealing to me more. For one thing floppy, soft-shaped hats seem more summery and a more stiff hat seems autumnal...although I don't know why! Anyway here's a small collection of the looks that are inspiring me right now.

Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween everyone! In case you were wondering whatever happened to the pumpkins Thomas and I picked at that patch in Vermont--this is it! We didn't have a place to carve them properly in Vermont so they ended up rolling around the backseat of my car for about a week and driving me crazy every time I took a turn or had to brake. But eventually we were back at my home and able to carve them up. I obviously worn something different while carving since I have no desire to get pumpkin guts on my new shoes!

Dream Collector

In the late 1960s photographer Arthur Tress turned his lens to the nightmares of children. From being buried alive to chased by monsters, Tress created surreal photographs of children re-inacting some of their worst dreams. The series is slightly disturbing and quite captivating. It's hard to look away from the images that blur reality and make us remember our own worst nightmares.

The Disclosure Of A Skeleton

I don't wear skeleton clothes year round, but the end of October while exploring an abandoned sleeper train car? Yes, this does seem like an appropriate occasion for a bone-y sweater and tights. It's been awhile since I've been inside this abandoned train car and while the side door was jammed so I had to climb up at a different spot, everything inside is pretty much the same. The rooms are very narrow so it's hard to get pictures of them, but they're mostly tiny chambers with empty bunkbeds and the same fading blue-green walls as the hallway you see in most of these pictures. I think of all the abandoned places I've had the opportunity to explore (mostly by living in close proximity to them!) these train cars are my favorite.

City of Shadows

Photographer Alexey Titarenko specializes in spooky, black and white photography in cities around the world. (Check out his Black and White magic St. Petersburg series for some stunners!) His most appropriate series for the season though is City of Shdaows. A haunting collection of long exposures that turn passing pedestrians into hordes of ghosts. While they remind me of the demons in Supernatural, it is also seems almost like a visual representation of what it is like to suffer from social anxiety in cities...In Titarenko's own words, "the mass of people flowing around the subway station formed a sort of human tide, giving me a sensation of unrealness, of phantasmagoria, These people were like shadows, one would meet in the Underworld. I decided to express that feeling in my work, to convey my personal expressions. I had to find a visual metaphor that would enable the viewer to share my feelings as acutely as possible. That is what prompted me to try a long exposure process."

Girl Scout

I rarely have a reason to wear a costume at Halloween these years--I'm far too old for trick-or-treating and most of my friends have fall themed parties without the costumes. But I do enjoy dressing up and when I saw this vintage girl scout dress hanging in an antique mall I couldn't resist. Most days I'll probably try to play down the girl scout look but since it is the season to "come as you aren't" I decided to play it up a bit. I could use a cute neck tie, but I do think my new purse looks appropriately on theme. I love the little embossed crossed keys and the handy size; it's made to carry your iPad or Nook, but also perfectly holds these binoculars and a map. Now, I need to go earn some merit badges!
