Halcyon Days

Something about summer always calls to mind the phrase "halcyon days" for me although I don't even know where it I heard it. Everything just becomes awash in golden tones--sunlight glowing warm against the skin, fields fading from new green growth to pale yellow, etc. Anyway, it's quite golden lately and pale dresses with flower crowns never felt more appropriate.

Asleep With Compasses In Our Hands

I keep forgetting that it's not officially summer yet when we have so many days that feel like summer. It's not just the temperatures--I see evidence in the fields turning golden and the children drawing with chalk on the sidewalks when they would usually be in school. There's evidence of a more energetic and free season when I visit lakes like this one, so quiet in winter filling with canoes and people swimming. Since summer is perhaps my favorite season I have few complaints. This dress is (as a friend told me when I put it on) a perfect summer dress; ideally I would wear the nautical themed piece by the ocean, but as I'm a bit land-locked the lakes and rivers in my area will have to suffice. It's really the colors of the dress that drew me too it--the cream base with splotches of teal, I have many things in my closet to match it with and I love how it looks with red accents.

Cream of the Crop

I have a couple of cropped sweaters I like wearing over dressed in fall and winter and now I'm slowly adding some cropped tops to my collection. I was quite resistant to the crop top at first since I hate crunches and nearly every article that mentions crop tops also goes into some body-shaming of suggesting we all amp up our spring exercises in order to look "appropriate" in these shorter tops, but after trying one on it a store with a high waist skirt I was won over (they're quite demure on petite a petite person, no?). Moreover, one of my favorite summer lines is something along the lines of "want a bikini body? have a body, put bikini on body, enjoy the summer." Too often the magazines and articles that are telling us about the latest trend are also telling us who can and can't wear it--when ultimately everyone is allowed to wear the clothes they want. Admittedly I'm still not completely comfortable in a bikini, but I'm one step closer to caring about all that nonsense less. I want to wear fun clothes, but ultimately I want to forget about what I'm wearing once it is one--the fun is in picking out the closet then going forth and being so comfortable in your clothes you can focus on the rest of your life.

Downhill Demesnes

Oh my winds. Thomas is a great sport in helping me take pictures and I always make an effort to smile so sometimes when you look back in retrospect it's hard to remember that between shots it rained on you and anytime you ventured away from these walls the wind threatened to blow you off a cliff. Ok perhaps not off a cliff, but it was strong wind that made exploring this area nearly miserable. We were both quite happy to troop from one end to the other, then away to a quiet beach where the rain abated and the wind lessened. I definitely had a better time running around in the sand and sitting in the dunes enjoying the sun than I did exploring in this particular set of castle ruins, but the pictures certainly came out nice! The architecture was very interesting and the views from the top were lovely, so hopefully I can return on a more calm day and appreciate my surroundings a bit more.

Travels and Tartans

So, I had to leave Helen's Tower behind but I'm still in Ireland, which is strangely starting to feel like a second home, and wearing tartan, perhaps I could be hopping over to a different island! I'm just a sucker for classic patterns like this one and I'm trying to stick with my goal of introducing longer lengths into my outfits on a regular basis. Really though, I wish I had a little ribbon topping off my ponytail in these pictures--that would have punctuated my hair and the outfit quite nicely, no? The ribbon bow is a style I've admired on others but haven't been able to attempt since my pixie cut, however I think my hair is finally long enough for that sort of simple embellishment. Progress.

The Subtleness of the Sea

Helen's Tower was located near the coast, so a seaside excursion was called for and I even packed the perfect dress in anticipation. I figured with Ireland being an island and all I would eventually have cause to wear a dress with whales--the knit made it an even more cozy option for the brisk excursion. I'm quite convinced that longer length skirts, even just ones that hit at my knee instead of above it, aren't the best for petite females like myself, however I'm trying to experiment with more of them this spring and summer. There's an elegance to a longer skirt that can't be found in something of the shorter more flippy cheerleader variety I usually favor. So, I'm trying to learn to deal with looking my height in favor of seeming more elegant.
